Amigos de Santa Cruz reported yesterday on the damage to Santa Cruz communities caused by Tropical Storm Aagtha:
Last weekend Tropical Storm Agatha swept across Guatemala, leaving a trail of destruction to a landscape still recovering from the aftermath of Hurricane Stan 4 years ago and the most recent eruption of Volcano Pacaya.
Many Lake Atitlan communities were hit badly, losing homes, schools and in some cases lives. Of our six Santa Cruz communities around the lake and in the mountains above, Jaibalito fared the worst. Fourteen families lost everything and many more homes and public buildings were severely damaged.
The government and NGO’s are doing their best to help families with immediate needs such as shelter, food and warm clothing. The rainy season is just beginning in Guatemala and more damage and destruction is anticipated.
Amigos has set up an Agatha Relief Fund to immediately address those with the most need. Their local staff is working on coordinating efforts in Santa Cruz to be sure local community members are cared for. Beyond Santa Cruz, they are reaching out to help other more needy populations in the Lake Atitlan area and working with other NGOs to funnel funds towards these communities.
